How often should I mow my lawn in the PNW?

The Pacific Northwest growing season — especially spring — means grass in Gresham and Portland can go from tidy to overgrown in just a few days after a rainy stretch. Most Portland-area lawns need mowing every week from March through October to stay healthy and looking their best.

Mowing too infrequently leads to clumping, uneven cuts, and extra stress on the lawn. A consistent weekly schedule keeps grass thick, healthy, and better able to crowd out weeds naturally. It also makes each mowing faster and easier — which is why CPM's weekly mowing customers in Gresham save money compared to calling for one-off cuts on an overgrown lawn.

When is it safe to mow after heavy rain?

After a wet Portland spring, timing is everything. Wait until the soil is firm underfoot and the grass blades are mostly dry before mowing — usually 24 to 48 hours after the last rain. Mowing wet, soggy turf can rut the soil, clump the clippings, and put unnecessary stress on the grass roots.

Don't wait too long once it dries out though. Overgrown grass is harder to cut cleanly and puts stress on the roots — and in the Pacific Northwest, a lawn can go from manageable to out of control within a single week during peak growing season.

Not sure if your lawn is ready? CPM serves Gresham, North Portland, and NE Portland and can assess and mow on a schedule that takes the guesswork out completely. Call or text (971) 235-1584 for a free estimate.
